After the success of the VW with dual clutch gearbox developed by Getrag dual-clutch gearbox for Ford cars, Volvo, Mitsubishi and others. PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission is the principle of using two clutches. Use of this gearbox offers compared to conventional automatic transmission, fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

Powershift was developed in cooperation with the German company Getrag. It is a dual-clutch transmission based on the principle of two parallel transmissions. Each transmission is designed for the odd gears and reverse, while the second transmission is designed for even-numbered gears. Principle PowerShift gearbox is similar to the above-mentioned DSG , we further described in the article on DSG . The two clutches operate alternately, with one clutch is connected at a time and transmits power to the wheels, while the other is disconnected thus allowing canned the next gear.

PowerShift transmission manufacturer, Getrag company, says lower fuel consumption by 8% compared with a conventional automatic transmission. The reason for lower power consumption, among other things, the fact that the PowerShift transmission does not require a torque converter, no planetary gears or multiple hydraulically operated clutch. This eliminates the added torque losses that are associated with these components.

The version of Powershift, manufactured in the Slovak company Getrag plant can handle up to 450 Nm of torque. Transmission will be fitted to the Volvo C30, S40 and V50, which will be combined with two-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel (100 kW, 320 Nm).
