OnStar is a safety and security system used in many cars of General Motors Corp. The system uses GPS satellite navigation and mobile operators network signal. In case of accident or other problems the system is able on demand or automatically connect drivers with OnStar center.
The main feature of OnStar's automatic crash notification system's equivalent of the European E-Call. Thanks to the OnStar car in a few seconds to send important information about the incident, including its exact location.
OnStar was introduced in 2000. Initially the system was able to send only information about the origin of the accident on the basis of data from the control unit airbag . The second generation system, however, uses a variety of other sensors installed in the vehicle and is able to provide much more detailed and comprehensive services.
The system consists of a range of sensors, GPS units and control units SDM (Sensing and Diagnostic Module). If failures occur OnStar system is capable of speed before impact, the total damage to the vehicle, congestion on impact acting on the crew, etc. to assess the severity of the accident and, if necessary, automatically send a distress signal. OnStar operator in the center immediately gets all available information that will provide immediate rescue. Another advantage of this system is that the operator can directly communicate with the crew and giving advice such as first aid. Of course there is the possibility of an operator and using the manual controls on the dashboard or mirror.
General Motors operates the system in the U.S. and Canada, but thanks carmaker Opel, which is part of, the system was introduced in 2002 on the European market. Unfortunately only works in Germany.
