GTD is an abbreviation indicating the sporty Volkswagen with a diesel motor. The abbreviation is derived from the older brother gasoline GTI.

Volkswagen for many years producing sporting variant of its best-selling Golf, which bears the GTi . Abbreviation GTi is reserved for petrol engines. Modern technology and the development of diesel engines in recent years, however, show that the slogan "oil belongs to the stove" may no longer be true. Therefore, Volkswagen continued the tradition of the eighties and introduced the sporty Golf with a diesel motor. For the first time, the diesel version appeared with the second generation Golf and powered her turbocharged 1.6-liter (80 hp).
