Engines D-4D Toyota represents a new generation of diesel engines with direct injection diesel. Through the use of a common fuel line to the new common rail engines feature a silent and cultivated running and low fuel consumption.

Abbreviation D-4D = Direct-injection common rail diesel engine or diesel engine with direct fuel injection system with common rail . Toyota introduced the first engine already in 1995. The newly developed D-4D engines have replaced outdated cellular engines that could not stand up to tough competition engines with direct injection diesel ( TDI , CDI , ...). Cellular engines use a simple principle of ignition of the mixture in the combustion chamber outside the main area. This system was fairly efficient, but lacked precision and refinement, which led to the creation of vibration and noise. Incomplete combustion of fuel and the engine was unable to meet current emission standards .

In response to growing market pressure thus created a series of engines called D-4D. Launch a new range of engines, unfortunately, seemed a bit rushed, and the first customers to fulfill the role of some test riders. The engine suffered frequent bad driving at full throttle, the diesel particulate filter was designed in city traffic and more often clogged. Its self-cleaning, then accompanied by clouds of white smoke. This initial failure, however, Toyota and motivate today's diesel engines are leaders in the market.

D-4D engines use modern common fuel line system called Common Rail . Fuel is fed to the cylinder through a common pipe under pressure 135 MPa. High pressure fuel line allows better fuel atomization and thus better combustion (the larger the difference in pressure in the nozzle and combustion chamber, the better to injected diesel scatter and create a homogeneous mixture ). The new D-4D engines have an aluminum block, which reduces their weight. Turbocharged engine ensures the turbocharger. With all these enhancements, the D-4D engines characterized by quiet and refined operation.
